Vlak Light, Gregor van Egdom

vlak is revolutionary in more than one aspect. It’s the first lamp that’s made out of Insulated Metal Substrate (IMS), an elegantly thin sandwich of brushed aluminium, isolation, copper and matt black paint. Until 5 years ago IMS was so expensive that it could only be afforded by space agencies. But really, it’s primary function up now, was as a superconductor in spacecrafts.

Why hide the technology when it looks this pretty? The vlak knows no inside or outside: technique and end product are the same thing. The printed circuits, the little wires, the inside of the knob – it’s all out there for your eye to wander and your brain to ponder.
